Jonah Hill Apologizes for Homophobic Slur: ‘I Said the Most Hurtful Word’

Jonah Hill is on an apology tour.

After TMZ released footage on Tuesday of the actor making a homophobic slur at the paparazzo over the weekend, Hill appeared on The Tonight Show, where he began by immediately addressing the news of his recent homophobic slur.

“Unfortunately, this isn’t a joke,” Hill said.

The video from TMZ shows Hill yelling, “Suck my dick, faggot!” He claims that the paparazzo had been following and antagonizing him the entire day, harassing him and his family.

“In response, I wanted to hurt him back, and I said the most hurtful word that I could think of at that moment,” Hill told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show. “Words have weight and meaning, and the word I chose was grotesque. And no one deserves to say or hear words like that.”

Hill has previously demonstrated support for the LGBT community. The actor took a stand on Twitter against Russia’s anti-gay laws during the Winter Olympics.

“My heart’s broken, and I genuinely am deeply sorry to anyone who’s been affected by that term in their life. I’m sorry, and I don’t deserve or expect your forgiveness,” Hill continued.

He also spoke on Howard Stern’s radio show on Tuesday, where he addressed his comments. “I played into exactly what he wanted and lost my cool, and in that moment, I said a disgusting word that does not at all reflect how I feel about any group of people.”

    The activist was a close friend of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay public official. He has since cofounded the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, given lectures on LGBT rights and created the AIDS Memorial Quilt, a community project that honors the lives of people who died of the disease.

    The joint project, founded in 2010 by Dannielle Owens-Reid and Kristin Russo, is a quirky, fun account that aims to help LGBTQ youth. They answer questions with honest advice and tour high schools and college campuses. Plus, they do it all with a sense of humor.

    Staley has been an AIDS and gay rights activist for decades. In 1989, he cofounded the Treatment Action Group (TAG), which lobbied for improved AIDS research. In 1994, Bill Clinton appointed him to the National Task Force on AIDS Drug Development. He’s also one of the main subjects of the Oscar-nominated documentary, How to Survive a Plague, which focused on AIDS activism groups, like TAG.

    Up until 2012, Laura Jane Grace was better known as Thomas James Gabel, the lead singer of punk band Against Me!. After a lengthy interview with Rolling Stone Gabel revealed she was a transgender woman and would henceforth go by the name Laura Jane Grace.

    The band is still going strong (releasing a new album titled Transgender Dysphoria Blues) and Grace has taken on an activism role while working on a memoir.

  9. 9. Dustin Lance Black

    Black is best known as the Oscar-winning screenwriter of Milk, the 2008 biopic about Harvey Milk. Since then, the openly gay writer has worked with the American Foundation For Equal Rights and the Trevor Project, and was one of the speakers at the 2009 LGBT March on Washington.

  10. 10. Ross Murray

    For news junkies, Ross Murray is the man to follow. He’s the director of news at GLAAD (an LGBT organization), so he’s always tweeting headlines about the gay rights movement.

    In addition, Murray is the founder and director of the Naming Project, a “faith-based camp for LGBT youth and their allies,” according to GLAAD.
