As a kid, you put yourself into various situations while trying to get to sleep crime fighter, princess, etc. but for one little boy, going to bed means he gets to be an astronaut every night.
1
Reddit user BrooklynEWD gets the award for coolest dad today because he turned this empty space into a spaceship bed complete with control panel and storage space for his 4-year-old son.
2
He began what he says is his first DIY project bybuilding the frame with2x4s and deck hangers, making it safe enough for thewhole family topile on top of during story time.
With the frame completed, he went on to involve his son in the process of getting pieces of wood cut to perfection.
3
“I want him to see that we can make things ourselves, and that not everything has to come from a store,” he wrote on Imgur.
When construction was finished, heimmediately started sanding and priming.
4
After twocoats of primer, herolled on a thick coat of blue and did a little detailing with some gold paint.
“I made a stencil in English and Aurebesh (the Star Wars language,)” he said. “The round ‘hatch’door has a common hardware store handle and foam pipe insulation wrapped on the edge for safety.”
5
But it’s not just a bed. There’s cool stuff happening underneath it too.
“Under the bed was left unpainted (for now) so that my son and I have a future project to do together,” he said. “It’s important to me that he make the space his own (when he’s ready) and this seemed like a great way to facilitate that.”
6
Now let’s get on to the really cool part…the incredible details.
“When designing the bed, I asked myself what I would want if I were 4 years old,” he said, “and this control panel was my answer.”
7
Hebought push button switches, a “double-bladed knife switch for backup generator,” and plastic safe toggle switch flip safety cover capsfrom eBay to make it look realistic.
He gets technical with the names of all the other toggle switches and components, but he basically picked up a lot of his supplies from from Jameco, McMaster-Carr, and Lowes.
They are a string of 50 white, green, and red wide angle LED christmas lights.
9
The switch labels were inspired by a mix of NASA space shuttle switch labels and Star Wars cross-section book text.
“The control panel design evolved slowly as I designed the bed,” he said. “Since most of the parts I wanted had incomplete dimensions listed in their descriptions, some parts had to be ordered first, measured, then designed into the available space on the panel layout.”
10
And about that battle station lighting?
“There are 3 multi-colored LED strips and 1 LED spotlight light from IKEA,” he said.

So how much did the whole thing cost?
“It definitely cost more than I had hoped,” he said. “It was, however, less than that $4,000 “Star Wars bed from Pottery Barn Kids, so I feel like I won.”
12
And given how much his son seems to enjoy it, that pretty much makes it worthwhile.
“When he’s too big for it, he can help build the next thing,” he said. “We will let the project evolve into something else.”
