On the heels of revelations about NSA spying comes a film that may leave online security advocates further infuriated.
In a documentary, titled Terms And Conditions May Apply, Facebook‘s CEO Mark Zuckerberg makes an appearance, in which he’s asked to talk about privacy and the dark side of the Internet.
The movie’s director, Cullen Hoback, told the Agence France-Presse that he approached Zuckerberg outside his California home, asking him: “Do you still think privacy is dead? What are your real thoughts on privacy?”
The Facebook founder reportedly requested that Hoback not record the impromptu exchange. Hoback said he could stop and obliged, switching off his video camera — but still managed to capture the conversation via spy glasses.
Hoback said he wanted to turn the tables, so to say, on the Facebook honcho: “I just wanted him to say, ‘Look, I don’t want you to record me,’ and I wanted to say, ‘Look, I don’t want you to record us.'”
Facebook has grappled with privacy controversies in the past, and with Snowden’s leak about NSA spying, Facebook users have been a little on edge as of late.
The scene will reportedly be included as part of the film’s 79-minute ethics dive into data mining and security smokescreens. The movie’s title, after all, comes from fine print attached to myriad online services and apps.
Hoback, in the documentary, attempts to shed light on what corporations and governments learn about others through Internet and cell phone usage, examining the cost of what are purportedly free services and what people are giving up when they click the “I Agree” button on companies such as Facebook and Google.
“The craziest thing about this whole experience is that I didn’t realize I was making a horror film,” Hoback told the AFP.
The filmmaker said everything that’s happened with regard to Snowden and the PRISM scandal, he thinks, is elevating interest in the film, which was released July 12. There’s a screening schedule available on its website.
