When Rory Curtis awoke from his 2012 coma, he was a Francophile Matthew McConaughey.

The barber had been in a coma for six days after crashing into a truck and being rammed by several cars on a motorway in Staffordshire, England.

The Redditch, Worcestershire man suffered brain hemorrhaging and physical wounds, including a broken pelvis.

When he finally awoke and headed to the bathroom, Curtis firmly believed he’d see McConaughey’s face staring back at him in the mirror.

Curtis told Metro,

In my head I thought I was Matthew McConaughey.

When I went to the toilet I went to look in the mirror and I was shocked because I didn’t look like him, I didn’t know what I was looking at.

Soon, the idea faded and Curtis remembered he knew McConaughey’s face from the big screen. He joked believing in his own movie star good looks “was hopeful thinking really.”

And even stranger than Curtis’ confused identity was his sudden fluency in French, a language he hadn’t studied since he was a teenager.

When his family entered the hospital room, Curtis was reportedly chatting in perfect French with a nurse about how he felt.

He added,

I was sitting there spouting a foreign language from my hospital bed acting all French in their sort of arrogant yet sophisticated way. It wasn’t me at all.

I wasn’t really that good at it at school, so I don’t how my brain has managed to do what is has. I don’t know how I know it – I just do.

The healing process was long and hard for Curtis, who struggled with simple tasks like drawing straight lines.

Once his English language understanding returned, Curtis’ brain also cycled through childlike stages where he’d cry for a dog he once owned as a child.

The National Institute for Health Research Surgical Reconstruction and Microbiology Research Centre approached the man’s family, offering to help speed mental recovery by means of an experimental drug used only once before.

And two months later, Curtis was home.

Though he endured months of physical therapy, the drug helped restore normal mental function.

Curtis hasn’t had “True Detective”-style delusions again, but he does hug his family every time he leaves home.
