Amazon Phasing Out Kindle DX

Amazon-phasing-out-kindle-dx-report--fda509a19c

It looks like Amazon is quietly discontinuing the Kindle DX, the large-format version of its classic Kindle eInk e-reader.

Amazon lowered the price of the Kindle DX from $379 to $299 last week, apparently to help clear out existing stock. Now, Amazon is no longer selling the device on its website, and there’s no notice that it will be restocked soon. It is only available for purchase from third-party sellers.

The eBook Reader Blog also noted that the DX has been removed from Amazon’s comparison chart for its Kindle e-readers and Kindle Fire tablets.

The Kindle DX was first introduced in 2009. It features a 9.7-inch eInk display (the same size as the iPad’s), thought to be optimal for the students and heavy periodical readers. At launch, it was available for a discount in conjunction with a subscription to The New York Times, The Washington Post or The Boston Globe. It was also piloted as a textbook replacement at five universities.

Amazon did not immediately reply for a request for comment.
