A humpback whale has taken an Australian couple on a wild boat ride after it got their yacht’s anchor rope in its mouth and dragged them 1.8 miles (3km) out to sea.

Glenn Wilson and Nerida Higgins were anchored off Fraser Island, near Queensland, when the whale took them on a terrifying trip that lasted for 15 minutes.

“We were probably doing about 10 knots. It just took off like a speed boat,” Ms Higgins told Nine News.

The couple called nearby boats, the coast guard and even police for help but all to no avail.

“I don’t think he believed me — I think they thought we’d had a few drinks of something,” Ms Higgins said.

When a second whale took the rope in its mouth, the couple decided to cut the line, fearing their boat would smash.

“We were hoping to see some whales but no actually that close,” Mr Wilson said.
