Rick Santorum Used To Blame 2006 Loss On The Iraq War

Republican Presidential candidate Rick Santorum deflects criticism for his 2006 17% defeat to then then Pennsylvania State Senator Bob Casey by saying that 2006 was a bad year for Republicans. But the bad year narrative wasn’t always the story told as the excuse for Santorum’s record defeat for an incumbent Senator in the modern political era. Rick Santorum’s website in 2009, claimed the loss was because of the Iraq War.

In 2006, Rick focused his reelection campaign to a third term on the threat this country faces from Islamic fascism, not just in Iraq, but around the globe. Without wavering he defended the war in Iraq and the requirement for victory not just in Iraq, but in confronting the greater threat of Iran. In what turned out to be a referendum on the war in Iraq, Rick Santorum was defeated.
