Canadian Corporal Nathan Cirillo may be gone, shot down by a gunman at Ottawa’s National War Memorial on Wednesday, but his dogs still await his return.
Photographs posted by Ontario journalist Melissa Raftis show two large canines with their heads wedged under the fence of Cirillo’s family home.
Heads pressed together, as if to comfort one another, the dogs wear mournful expressions. They reportedly watched quietly as mourners placed flowers and flags in front of the house.
Cirillo rescued both animals from a shelter some time ago and referred to them as his “family.”
Although scientists can’t be exactly sure what goes through a dog’s mind when its owner dies, the ASPCA reports two-thirds of dogs experience a dramatic decrease in appetite and lack of energy after losing their best friends.
Dogs have been known to howl at funerals and even curl up on graves.
