John Green’s love for Indiana is more than evident in the hit summer blockbuster, check it out!

But more than ever, Hoosiers could bask in the absolute beauty of Indiana that John Green portrays throughout the novel and the movie. Filled with local Indianapolis tidbits, stellar references, and quick visual nuances that every Hoosier can appreciate, TFIOS will make moviegoers proud of their state.

2. Augustus Waters’ Rik Smits Jersey

One of the first striking Hoosier images is featured when Augustus and Hazel went on their first date — the famous number 45 splashed across the blue and yellow jersey belonged to the famous Indiana Pacers’ own Rik Smits.
With almost 13,000 career points and phenomenal offensive stats, Rik Smits played alongside other Pacers greats like Reggie Miller and Detlef Schrempf. He is one of the tallest NBA players of all time, towering at 7’4”. He played for the Pacers from 1988 to 2000, sticking with them throughout his whole professional career.
4. Butler Bulldogs T-shirt
Due to their amazing NCAA March Madness runs in 2010 and 2011, the Butler Men’s Basketball team turned heads across the nation as they stormed through the tournament. Bracket busters for sure, the Butler Bulldogs were a force to be reckoned with.
Butler University’s Hinkle Fieldhouse is one of the most historic basketball courts of all time — it was featured in the 1986 smash-hit film Hoosiers, where Hickory High School plays for the state basketball title and wins in one of the greatest sports upsets ever. Built in 1928, it is currently a National Historic Landmark.
But that’s not all — John Green was awarded an honorary doctorate from Butler University in 2013 when he gave a Commencement Address to graduating seniors. You can read the Commencement Address right here on DOCTOR Green’s tumblr page.
7. Funky Bones
When Augustus Waters takes Hazel on the dutch-themed picnic date, he mentions in the book:
“Two things I love about this sculpture,” Augustus said… “First, the bones are just far enough apart that if you’re a kid you cannot resist the urge to jump between them. Like you just have to jump from rib cage to skull.”
Funky Bones, commissioned by the Indianapolis Museum of Art, has been around since 1995 and is part of the 100 Acres park.
Fun Fact: John Green’s wife, Sarah Urist Green, was the curator for contemporary art at the Indianapolis Museum of Art from 2007 to 2013 before creating The Art Assignment, a new series for PBS Digital Studios.
