Tennessee Titans rookie Zach Mettenberger got a big break last week when he was named the team’s starting quarterback for Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans, and he marked the occasion by cutting his hair and posting a few selfies.
This struck a nerve with the Texans’ star defensive end J.J. Watt.
After sacking Mettenberger for the second time on Sunday, Watt celebrated the tackle by taking a mock-selfie with Mettenberger as the quarterback pulled himself up from the turf. Watt explained to reporters after the game that he thinks the rookie quarterback needs to get his priorities straight.
“I just, I take my job very seriously,” Watt said during the post-game interview. “If I was a rookie quarterback being named the starter for the first time in the league, I feel like I’d be a little bit more focused than that.”
Mettenberger said he had always planned to cut his hair when he was named to start his first NFL game. He posted two Instagram photos of himself last week documenting the before and after of his haircut, then one more to Twitter just 90 minutes before kickoff. The first mimicked the mustache and red headband of Ben Stiller’s character from Dodgeball.

“Ultimately that’s what this game is about — it’s about having fun. Any time you get an opportunity to show some character or personality, you’ve got to make the most of that,” Mettenberger told ESPN.
Watt was apparently not amused.
“This is the National Football League, not high school. Welcome to the show,” he said in the post-game interview.
