A comedy club in Barcelona is now using facial recognition technology to track how often customers laugh so it can charge them accordingly.
Entrance to the Teatreneu club is free, but each time a customer laughs, a tablet on the back of each seat keeps record. Customers are charged 38 cents per laugh, with the maximum charge for one night being the equivalent of $30.
According to the BBC, the experiment was motivated by an increase in taxes on tickets that resulted in significant drops in attendance.
The system has so far been successful, with the new ticket prices coming out to 6 euros, about $8, which is more than before the implementation of the new policy.
