Incredible Dolphin Birth at Dolphin Quest Hawaii

It’s a girl! Keo, the 12-year-old dolphin mother, was in labor for approximately one hour before giving birth to a healthy calf. The baby was a first for Keo and the 18th calf born at the conservation marine park on September 17, 2012.

Calves are typically born tail first so that they do not drown and “can suckle for up to 18 months, although they begin eating fish at about 6 months of age,” according to the Dolphin Research Institute website

Although not visible in the video, Pele (the baby’s grandmother) and Noelani (the baby’s aunt) were also in the Dolphin Quest lagoon to keep the mother company.
