Four Indicted In Steubenville Rape Cover-Up

An Ohio grand jury indicted four people Monday in the ongoing Steubenville rape case, including Steubenville City Schools District Superintendent Mike McVey.

In March, two high school football players were found guilty in a juvenile court of raping a 16-year-old girl in August 2012. Since then, a grand jury has been working to bring the adults responsible for the alleged cover-up of the girl’s rape to justice.

McVey was indicted on five counts, including tampering with evidence and obstruction of justice — both felonies — and falsification. Steubenville High School volunteer assistant football coach Matthew Belardine was charged with four misdemeanors: allowing underage drinking, obstructing official business, falsification, and contributing to delinquency of a child.

Steubenville High School wrestling coach Seth Fluharty and Pugliese Elementary School Principal Lynette Gorman were both charged with failure to report child abuse, another misdemeanor.

The grand jury has previously indicted two other people: Steubenville IT Director William Rhinaman — for tampering with evidence, obstructing justice, obstructing official business, and perjury — and his 20-year-old daughter, for theft charges not related to the rape case.

“It’s time to let Steubenville move on,” Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine said at Monday’s announcement. He did not say whether the grand jury was done bringing forward charges.
