An unidentified person has been quarantined in Hawaii and is currently being tested for Ebola.

The patient’s symptoms and travel history were not disclosed, but deputy state epidemiologist Dr. Melissa Viray revealed that Ebola is usually only a concern if the feverish individual has traveled to West Africa.

He or she is being treated at The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu.

Viray told KHON2,

We are early in the investigation of a patient — very, very early — who we’re investigating that might have Ebola. It’s very possible that they do and they have Ebola. I think it’s also more likely that they have another condition that presents with similar symptoms.

She added that his symptoms also resemble those of the flu, malaria and typhoid.

But the public, Viray said, has no reason to be concerned.

She said,

Like I said, this is a possible case we’re investigating. We don’t know if this is Ebola or a number of other conditions.

KHON2 reports that while the hospital does not have a space designed for possible Ebola patients, it has all the equipment needed to keep staff members protected.

Viray did not provide an estimated time in terms of when doctors could confirm the person’s test results, saying it’s too early to make any guesses.

Thomas Duncan, the first person to be diagnosed with Ebola in the US, is being treated at Texas Presbyterian Medical Center in Dallas. He’s reported to be in stable condition.

On Wednesday, he was discovered to have come into direct contact with 12 to 18 people, five of whom were children, before his diagnosis.
