When the transformation began to take place shortly after his birth, Ramesh’s parents were at a loss. They couldn’t afford medical care, so they made him comfortable as the disease worsened and spread.

His mother, Nanda, says, His skin started peeling off 15 days after he was born and then new skin began to grow very thick. It hardened and turned black, we had no idea what to do about it. No one helped us.”

His parents took him to rural doctors, who incorrectly diagnosed the issue as a fungal condition. They said there was nothing they could do, leaving the parents heartbroken, and Ramesh in his suffering state.

Soon into childhood, the disease had left Ramesh able to communicate with his parents no better than an animal could.

By his fifth birthday he began to say his body was in pain and he couldnt walk. Hes never really been able to explain anything to us either. He is only able to inform us when hes hungry or wants to use the toilet, said Nanda, his mother.

A year later, at the age of six, the condition had left him unable to walk. However, his parents had gotten the disease correctly diagnosed. It was a rare condition called Ichthyosis.

However, that knowledge didn’t help them much, because they couldn’t afford treatment. So they were left to watch as he continued to suffer. His father had a job that paid only $65 per month.
