The Expansion Of Cities Over The Last 5,700 Years

For most of us, cities are a part of everyday life, but it hasn’t always been this way. This time lapse from Metrocosm, entitled “The History of Urbanization, 3,700 BC – 2,000 AD,” demonstrates the rise and spread of cities over the past 5,700 years. Ever since Eridu in the Middle East, cities have spread across the globe with increasing velocity and show no sign of stopping. By 2030, it is predicted that 75 percent of people will be living in cities. To put that in perspective, only about 34 percent were living in cities in 1960. Thank goodness for the invention of the wheel, huh?
