Child abuse is never amusing.

A Mankato, MN, restaurant learned that lesson the hard way after making a joke about NFL player Adrian Peterson on its Facebook page.

Weggy’s On Campus posted a Facebook status that read,

Today’s Game Day Special: ‘Wear your AP jersey in and you get to SPANK your server!!’

The unfortunate joke came after news that Peterson, star running back for the Minnesota Vikings, is under investigation for allegedly abusing his child by hitting his son with a switch when he misbehaved.

Mere days later, Peterson was in the news again for a newly-emerged incident of alleged abuse of a different son.

Weggy’s On Campus owner Steve Wegman told the media that the status was merely a “bad joke” made by one employee, but that he or she will not be fired.

He said,

I guess at the end of the day someone thinks they’re funny or making a joke to college kids, but in actuality words are weapons and I guess that’s the message we’ll send forth.

Wegman also said he’s changed his business’ social media rules in light of the mishap.
