Ex-Con Looking To Turn Life Around Saves Woman With Kidney Transplant

An ex-convict saved a mother’s life by donating the kidney she asked for in a newspaper ad at the beginning of the year.

Sally-Anne Grainger, 34, of Worcestershire, Britain, was having dialysis treatment for kidney failure three times a week when she took out an ad in the Worcester News last January.

The mother of two had a double lung transplant in 2009 for her cystic fibrosis, but the medication she needed afterward left her with renal failure and in need of a kidney, the BBC reports.

Ten people responded to the ad, but only one had the tissue and blood type to be a perfect match.

That match was Wesley Joyce, 33, a former soldier who went to jail for four years in 2004 on assault charges.

He told the BBC,

I looked at her story and it got to me a bit. I looked at her children and I could not imagine the mums of my children not being there for them. I thought: ‘I need to change my life a little bit’, as I’ve not been a good boy all my life.

I’ve done good things and bad things, but I thought, let’s do good from now on. This is a good place to start. Let’s save someone’s life.

Grainger is currently recovering from a successful operation she underwent last Friday.

She said,

I have no words to describe my gratitude. I’m just so overwhelmed that a stranger has come forward to donate his kidney. I didn’t expect it to happen, it only happens in movies.

Joyce, a father of four, could need anywhere from four to 12 weeks to make a full recovery.

The two are now close friends, according to the Telegraph, with Grainger referring to her savior as “Wes Almighty,” after the Jim Carrey film.

She told her local paper that she is elated now to have the chance to see her two daughters, 10 and 14, grow up.
