Students at a high school in Norfolk, Virginia stormed out of class on Monday in an act of protest over a school administrator’s racist retweet.

Back in June, Booker T. Washington High School Assistant Principal Amy Strickland retweeted a photo from the account @OrNahhTweets.

The photo was a prom picture of seven white females accompanied by seven black males.

Here is the original tweet as Strickland’s retweet has since been deleted:

The retweet was recently discovered by students at the high school.

The students brought the tweet to the attention of the school’s administration, but no action was taken.

So, approximately a dozen students walked out of class to shine a light on the issue.

One such student named Michael LeMelle said,

I could have been any one of the boys in the picture. And I really don’t see myself… as anyone’s worst nightmare.

The students don’t necessarily want Strickland fired, however. They just want to know their calls for tolerance and justice are being heard.

Strickland actually won three Teacher of the Year awards this past year and had a stellar reputation prior to this incident.

The school has yet to make any statement on the controversy.
