Bird uses piece of bread as bait for fishing

This bird got a hold of some bread and is using it to catch what it really wants — a fish.

The catch itself happens about a minute and a half in, so jump ahead if you’re in a hurry. But the process leading up to it makes the success all the more satisfying…unless you’re rooting for the fish.

The bird is a Little Green(backed)Heron. Birds are smart! — and they teach to their young the feeding techniques they have learned.

It’s a Green Heron. Turns out using bait to go fishing is something they are known for, but is uncommon among most animals.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Heron The species is most conspicuous during dusk and dawn, and if anything these birds are nocturnal rather than diurnal, preferring to retreate to sheltered areas in daytime. Sometimes they drop food, insects, or other small objects on the water’s surface to attract fish, making them one of the few known tool-using species. This feeding method has led some to title the green and closely related Striated Heron as among the world’s most intelligent birds.[5] They are able to hover briefly to catch prey.

As kingfishers catch fire, dragonflies draw flame; …… Each mortal thing does one thing and the same: …… “myself” it speaks and spells, Crying “Whát I dó is me: for that I came.”(GERARD MANLEY HOPKINS)
