10 Do’s And Dont’s Of Skincare

1. DO wash your face morning and night.

Don’t tell me it’s too time-consuming. Do you honestly prefer waking up to an oil-slick on your pillow? Or better yet, mascara rings under your eyes? *tsk tsk*

2. DON’T use alcohol-based products on your face.

Alcohol isn’t great for you internally, and NEWSFLASH: barring its antiseptic uses on wounds, it isn’t great for your epidermis either. To avoid giving your skin the flakies, use an herbal gel with tea-tree as a spot-treatment.

3. DON’T use water-based moisturizers.

It isn’t that these are inherently bad for you, but they are a major money-suck. Since water is absorbed into the skin extremely quickly, it takes a fair heaping of these water-based cremes to hydrate your skin. The reason? So you’ll have to restock more quickly, of course! Your best bet would be investing in an essential oil-based moisturizer – you won’t have to use as much, and your skin will be more hydrated in the long run.

4. DON’T exfoliate every day.

This is a prime example of “too much of a good thing.” Exfoliation is for getting rid of dead skin cells. What happens when you have no more dead skin cells? You’re scrubbing away on fresh new skin that doesn’t need it. If you exfoliate your skin every single day, you are much more likely to develop tiny abrasions in your skin. Limit your scrub-happy self to three days a week max.

5. DO give your neck the same attention as your face.

Wash your neck with your face wash! Moisturize it too! Believe it or not, this is one of the first places where people begin aging – because, even though it is just as delicate as the face, it is typically neglected in the daily skincare routine. Pamper your décolletage, ladies!

6. DO wear sunscreen.

Yep, I am your mother. And no, I’m not talking about that diddly little “SPF 15” tinted powder makeup you use. I’m talking the real deal, preferably SPF 30 or higher. And don’t tell me you don’t burn, because I’m not just talking about sunburns, I’m talking about WRINKLES. You don’t want ‘em, so don’t be lazy about it.
And while you’re at it, put that sh*t on your neck too.

7. DON’T pop those pimples!

Refer to my suggestion about the herbal gel (above). Trust me, as annoying as it is, it is best to take the path of least resistance when it comes to blemishes. Unless you really WANT that giant red mark on your face for a week.

8. DO massage your face.

Threw a lil’ curveball atcha, didn’t I? Well, if you want a simple way to help maintain the elasticity in the collagen level beneath your skin (hint: you do), you’ll use a nice rich nighttime moisturizer to give your cheeks a nice little rubdown.

9. DO drink plenty of water.

Yes, I’m aware that this is the oldest trick in the book, but there’s a reason for it! Making sure your body stays hydrated will help ensure your skin stays hydrated. It will also ensure that you don’t get as many breakouts. (And yes, the ladies in this photo are probably drinking something a bit more “exciting” than water, but just go with it).

10. DON’T go on the offensive with your skincare.

As frustrating as breakouts can be, sometimes it’s better to calm and soothe your skin, as opposed to attempting to beat it into submission. Though the results may not be immediate, a gentle skincare routine will pay off in the long run and provide you with supple, clear skin!
