etroit rapper Eminem has courted controversy ever since he blasted into the zeitgeist in February 1999 with the Slim Shady LP. Via his profane alter-ego Slim Shady, the “My name is” rapper has waged insult wars with pop stars, politicians, and even a chain-smoking hand-puppet, on one occasion. He has also, at varied times been accused of homophobia.
Over the years, the rapper has had many homophobic lyrics in his songs. In 2013, for instance, he was taken to task over the perceived anti-gay sentiment in his album, Rap God.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Eminem responded to the question of why he used the phrase “gay-looking” as an insult. (For the record, he also used other, harsher homophobic insults not fit for print.)
I don’t know how to say this without saying it how I’ve said it a million times. But that word, those kind of words, when I came up battle-rappin’ or whatever, I never really equated those words . . .[To actually mean ‘homosexual’]... It was more like calling someone a bitch or a punk or asshole… But the real me sitting here right now talking to you has no issues with gay, straight, transgender, at all.
Despite Eminem’s problematic lyrics, the rapper has been a vocal advocate for homosexuality in other ways. In 2010, he spoke out in favor of gay marriage, stating, “I think if two people love each other, then what the hell? I think that everyone should have the chance to be equally miserable, if they want.”
Of course, this is the same man who kissed Elton John then went back to spitting homophobic lyrics, so – grain of salt. Still, it seems Eminem has changed from the raw, rage-filled youth that exploded onto the airways with record after record filled with violent misogyny and homophobia.
Now, he even winks at the fact that he himself might be gay. In fact, the man also known as Marshall Mathers once had a very surprising cameo on the film The Interview, where he nonchalantly came out to his interviewer, played by James Franco.
