And you thought you knew all about ponies. A new collaborative film project on the funding platform Kickstarter will attempt to blow away the rainbows-and-glitter image of the 1980s My Little Pony cartoon with sordid stories of the four-legged underworld.
Filmmaker Jay Speiden’s proposed DVD series, Pony Tales, features a brown plastic palomino figurine whose misfortune takes him out of his idyllic rural farm into seedy locations, which in large part will be supplied by participants in the project.
On his page, Speiden says that scripting has been completed for most episodes, but he plans to add handpicked scenes submitted by viewers. He will send out a palomino figurine to any viewer who submits a script or detailed scene idea and a locale that meets his comedic standards.
“The best of these scenes — those that clearly demonstrate genius levels of sadistic glee in finding new ways to take palomino’s worldly tests to the next level of bizarre and unlucky, will be selected to be dropped into each new episode,” he wrote.
While My Little Pony fans embrace little-girl values like friendship, being yourself and kindness to all, Speiden’s project focuses on the threats to society and promises no happy endings. That will be up to participants, he said.
Along with eight video episodes, Pony Tales will also have a social website where fans can follow the story, submit video, communicate through forums, watch back episodes and promote new content.
“Finding and hiring the best developer we can afford will be where most of the donations will be spent because this is what will make or break the project’s success,” Speiden said.
Like all Kickstarter projects, Speiden’s has a minimum funding level to meet and a deadline. Pony Tales will need to raise $10,000 by Nov. 2.
