iOS 7 Update Plugs Lock Screen Security Hole

Apple released an update to iOS 7 on Thursday that aims to repair a security flaw: a lock-screen bypass that allows a user to call any contact without unlocking the phone.

The notes that accompany the iOS 7.0.2 update say it “fixes bugs that could allow someone to bypass the Lock screen passcode.” Mashable staffers were able to recreate the bug on older iPhones running iOS 7, but not the latest models.

The software update has one other change: It brings back a Greek keyboard option for entering the lock screen passcode. To download the update, open your iPhone’s settings and navigate to General>Software Update.

Passcode bypass is a common security flaw in mobile operating systems, including Apple’s. The bug crops up regularly as Apple releases software updates, some of which are intended to move specific functionality (such as the new Control Center in iOS 7) to the other side of the “wall” (i.e., have it accessible while the phone is locked).

Typically the bugs are eliminated quickly in incremental updates, as is the case here. More extensive security changes, such as introducing encryption for a file (as Apple did in response to “LocationGate” in 2011), usually need wait for a major version update.
