The Washington state woman Mashable wrote about in early October when her cochlear hearing implant surgery was live-tweeted and Instagrammed, is going on camera again as doctors turn on the hearing implant for the first time.

Seventy-nine year old Eleanor Day will have her hearing implant activated using a remote-controlled type device on Wednesday morning at 8:30- 9:30 a.m. PT by doctors at the Swedish Medical Center in Seattle. The event will be live streamed and narrated on Twitter, in addition to CoverItLive, to raise awareness about the procedure.

Day has been losing her hearing for nearly 20 years and she’s been completely hearing impaired for five years. Although it’s not a 100 percent guaranteed the implant will work, her audiologist, Stacy Watson AuD, said that in her 13 years of practice, there was only one patient who was unable to hear, and “we were not sure he would hear anyway.” But, based on Day’s hearing history, Dr. Watson said she believes there will not be any problem.

There were nearly 400 tweets using the hashag #SwedishHear on the day of her hearing implant surgery as it was documented on Twitter and Instagram. (Worth noting: A cochlear implant is different than a hearing aid, because it is internal and puts electrodes under the skin.)

When Mashable spoke to Dr. Douglas Backous, head of Center for Hearing and Skull Base Surgery, who performed the surgery earlier this month, he said the reason the staff and Day decided to document the procedure on Twitter and Instagram was to raise awareness. Dr. Backous said only 10 percent of people who qualify for this surgery actually end up receiving it.
