The Smell of Farts Can Prevent Cancer And Other Diseases

We’ve all been there before, where you’re sitting somewhere minding your own business when all of a sudden there’s a scent in the air you’re all too familiar with.

A scent we’ve smelled a million times before with another million to go – someone farted. Before you know it, that smell has stuck inside your nose and it only gets worse, but apparently that can make you feel better.

New findings from a study conducted by Scientists at the University of Exeter show that the smell of farts may actually be beneficial for your health, thanks to them consisting of hydrogen sulfide gas. They’ve shown that the gas may potentially reduce the risk for diseases like dementia and cancer, as well as being a preventative for strokes, arthritis and heart attacks.

The study was recently published in Medicinal Chemistry Communications, they showed the effects of the gas on mitochondrial cells. Small amounts of the gas were applied to those cells, and they saw that it may in fact prevent mitochondrial damage.

The scientists that conducted the study explained that those cells actually produce minute portions of the hydrogen sulfide gas themselves for protection after drawing in other enzymes. They went on to state:

“We have exploited this natural process by making a compound, called AP39, which slowly delivers very small amounts of this gas specifically to the mitochondria. Our results indicate that if stressed cells are treated with AP39, mitochondria are protected and cells stay alive.”

So while this study isn’t conclusive for all humanity as of yet, it’s a step in the right direction for the civil liberties of all fart-kind.
