ust when we thought America had its finger on the pulse of the worst reality TV ever, the rest of the world stepped in to say, Hold my beer.
From prostitutes on the come-up to full-frontal naked dating competitions, here’s a list of 15 reality shows across the globe that might shock and surprise you. Or at the very least, totally confuse you.
Ready4Marriage – Zambia
Ever wonder how a real life (and enormously depressing) version of Pretty Woman might play out in reality? Well, they apparently did in Zambia! Because this show’s premise was all about rounding up prostitutes in order to make them “wife material.”
18 sex workers competed in contests such as ironing shirts, sweeping floors, and cleaning bathrooms in order to prove their domesticity. The prize? $9,000 and a husband. Oh. My. God.
Dadagiri – India
Claiming to be “one of the meanest shows on TV,” India’s popular televised contest asks contestants to withstand the torture of being bullied relentlessly for a cash prize.
Even more shocking than people creating this show? People willingly signed up to compete.
Sasuke (Ninja Warrior) – Japan
Kind of like our American Ninja Warrior, except more deadly and gross. Sasuke has been called “Wipeout on steroids,” setting contestants up in absurd obstacle courses that practically kill them.
Think: Hunger Games for consenting adults. Good times.
Amaan Ramazan – Pakistan
Throughout Ramadan, Pakistani contestants are given prizes for correctly answering religious questions. Sounds pretty tame. Until the show decided to give away BABIES as first prize to some couples! Yes, actual orphaned babies were “gifted” to two unsuspecting couples, both of whom are still raising their little first place prizes to this day.
I have so many questions.
Beauty Class – China
Ever wonder how to achieve perfection? China’s Beauty Class claims it can teach any woman how to be perfect. The promo asks, “Scared to wear mini-skirts? No problem — let me teach you to how to develop a sinuous physique and charming personality, and you’ll become a perfect beauty in the blink of an eye.”
The series purports to turn “ugly ducklings” into submissive swans. Essentially, it’s like dying in 2018 and waking up in the Ming Dynasty.
