The great and never-ending Snape debate has taken another turn after one Redditor pointed out a pretty horribledetail that the rest of us were totally oblivious to.
Whether Snape is a hero or a villain has been very thoroughly debated over the years, and most people are very much staunchly either one way or the other. There’s no middle ground in this discussion.
Redditor ‘Always934‘ (we see what you did there) took to the Harry Potter subreddit to post what he noticed about Snape’s detentions.
Snape was always one for grisly detentions, but what most of us didn’t notice was that he was in the habit of making naughty students dissect the animals they kept as pets.
Ron notably had a pet rat called Scabbers (who later turned out to be a death eater in disguise, but whatever) and he and Harry were repeatedly sent to the dungeon by Snape and forced to pick rat brains.

Neville Longbottom had a pet toad, Trevor, who he loved dearly. Which is why, for one of his many detentions, Snape sent him to dissect an entire barrel of the slimy little things. Cruel, cruel man.
Another fan theory has recently explained why Snape hated poor Longbottom so much, with onePotter fan suggesting a certain prophecy was to blame.
This quote from Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix gives an indication:
The odd thing, Harry, he said softly, is that it may not have meant you at all. Sybills prophecy could have applied to two wizard boys, both born at the end of July that year, both of whom had parents in the Order of the Phoenix, both sets of parents having narrowly escaped Voldemort three times. One, of course, was you. The other was Neville Longbottom.
Basically, Snape knew that if Voldemort had chosen the Longbottoms instead of the Potters, his beloved Lily mightstill be alive.
Other than that, he was just a bully and bit of a prick really – if we’re being honest.
We’re mostly just glad Hermione never got a detention…
